SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service terminates with an access violation during the processing of outbound Internet mail. Viewing the application log using event viewer may show some of the following events:

CAUSE

The Internet Mail Service was incorrectly handling an invalid response from other SMTP servers on the Internet.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Exchange Server version 5.5. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5. This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 3.
