In Microsoft Excel, when you double-click a cell that contains a note, a
link to another worksheet, or a precedent, a flashing bar appears in the
cell. The note, linked
worksheet, or precedent is not displayed when you double-click the cell.
CAUSE
In Microsoft Excel, when you double-click a cell, a flashing bar appears,
and then you can edit directly in the cell. If you want to display cell
notes or select a cell's precedents, use one of the workarounds in this
article.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, do one of the following:
Method 1: Clearing the "Edit directly in cell" Check Box- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Edit tab.
- Click to clear the Edit directly in cell check box.
- Click OK.
After you clear this option, when you double-click a cell, the note is
displayed or the linked information or precedents are selected.
Method 2: Using the Auditing Toolbar- On the View menu, point to Toolbars and click Customize.
- Click the Toolbars tab.
- Click the Auditing toolbar.
- Click Close.
Instead of double-clicking a cell to select precedents, you can now use the Trace Precedents button located on the Auditing toolbar.
Method 3: Displaying the Cell Note
You can display and edit a cell note by pressing SHIFT+F2.
