WD2000: How to Use Settings for Viewing and Printing Objects (214200)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q214200

SUMMARY

This article discusses how you can use the Drawing objects and Picture placeholders settings to control how quickly a document is displayed on your screen and how it is printed.

In some cases, adjusting these settings may help you to troubleshoot problems such as ClipArt or other drawing object not printing, or your document appearing slowly. These settings also allow you to print only the text of a document that includes drawing objects.

MORE INFORMATION

Use the Drawing objects setting to control how quickly documents that contain drawing objects are printed or whether drawing objects are printed at all.

This setting affects objects in the drawing layer only; it does not affect any object in the text layer of your document.

To use the Drawing objects setting, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Print tab.
  2. Under Include with document, select or clear the Drawing objects check box.
    • If this setting is selected, floating objects or any objects that you insert into your document from the Drawing toolbar are visible when you click Print Layout on the View menu or Print Preview on the File menu. The objects are not visible when you click Normal, Outline, or Web Layout on the View menu. All objects are printed.
    • If this setting is cleared, drawing objects are not printed; therefore, the document should be printed faster.

The drawing objects are visible when you click Print Layout on the View menu but not when you click Print Preview on the File menu, and they are not printed.
Use the Picture placeholders setting to control how fast you can display and scroll through a document that contains graphics.

This setting does not affect objects in the drawing layers of your document, except for pictures inside a text box.

To use the Picture placeholders setting, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the View tab.
  2. Under Show, select or clear the Picture placeholders check box.
    • If this setting is selected, any picture in the text layer of your document or inside a text box is displayed as an empty box when you click Print Layout on the View menu. This speeds up scrolling through the document while you use print layout view. When you click Print Preview on the File menu and when you print the document, the picture is visible.
    • If this setting is cleared, all pictures are displayed and printed correctly; however, scrolling through the document may be slower.
