WD2000: Tabs in Tables Lost When Saving as Text with Layout (.ans, .asc) (214182)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q214182 SYMPTOMS
When you save a Word document as either Text with Layout (*.ans) or MS-DOS Text with Layout (*.asc), and the document contains a table that is formatted with tab stops, some or all tabs in the table may be lost when the document is converted.
CAUSE
When a Word document contains a table, the Text with Layout (*.ans) and/or MS-DOS Text with Layout (*.asc) converter separates the table columns by using a tab in the text file. The converter cannot correctly handle a center-aligned or right-aligned tab.
The center-aligned tab is lost in the text file, and a space is placed between the text instead of the tab.
The right-aligned tab is changed in the text file to a left-aligned tab.
All other tabs are retained from the table: table column separators, left-aligned, and decimal-aligned.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
