XL2000: Linked Cells Display #REF! Error Message with Dependent Workbook (214023)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q214023 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Excel, if you open a dependent document linked to a source
document, you may receive the following error message:
#REF!
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the source document is renamed after the link to it is created in the dependent document.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
This behavior is not the same as in the earlier versions of Excel; in versions earlier than Excel 5.0, a Change Links dialog box is displayed regardless of which document is opened first. Excel versions 5.0 and later view worksheets as documents within a workbook and do not display an alert message when a worksheet is not found.
