OL2000: Install via SMS Does not Place the Outlook Icon on the Quick Launch Bar (212981)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Outlook using a package deployment with Microsoft System Management Server (SMS), and choose the "Install on First Use" option, you will not have an Outlook icon on the Windows Quick Launch bar.

CAUSE

SMS automatically sets the Outlook first-run switch which prevents the icon from being inserted on actual first-run.

RESOLUTION

Use the Programs menu or the Desktop icon to start Outlook. Or, you can manually add the Outlook shortcut to the Quick Launch folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

To manually insert the Outlook icon on the Quick Launch bar, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the Quick Launch bar background.
  2. Click Open on the shortcut menu to open the Quick Launch folder.
  3. Right-click the folder background, point to New on the shortcut menu, and click Shortcut.
  4. Browse to, and click to select the Outlook.exe file and click Open.
  5. Click Next and Finish.
  6. Close the Quick Launch folder.
You should now see the Outlook icon on the Quick Launch bar.
