The following Visual Basic for Applications code returns the version number of Word: 
Sub GetVersion()
   MsgBox Application.Version
End Sub

This example displays a message box containing the specific release number along with the version number of Word in the format of <version number>.<build number> : 
Sub GetBuild()
   MsgBox Application.Build
End Sub
