SUMMARY

Microsoft Publisher has the ability to place page numbers on every page of your publication. This article describes some common page numbering tasks.

MORE INFORMATION

Consecutively Numbering Pages

To consecutively number each page, follow these steps:
  1. On the View menu, click Go To Background.
  2. Create a text frame in the location for the page number.
  3. On the Insert menu, click Page Numbers. This puts a pound (#) sign into that text frame as a place marker for the page numbers. Format the pound sign in any size, alignment, or typeface you want.

Note: In Publisher, all page numbers are formatted as Arabic numerals. To use another numbering system (such as Roman numerals), you must manually type and position the numbers on each individual page.
  4. On the View menu, click Go To Foreground. The page numbers should appear on each page of the publication.

Hiding a Page Number for a Particular Page

In some cases, you may not want a page number to appear on a particular page. To suppress the page number on a particular page, use either of the following methods:
  • Draw a box over the page number. Apply a white fill color and a white border. This will "electronically white-out" the number, and the page number will not be printed. NOTE: Some printers may not be capable of "electronic white-out". If your printer does not support "electronic white-out," use method 2 to omit page numbers.

    or

  • On the View menu, click Ignore Background. Ignore Background does not place any objects from the background page on the selected page.

Starting Page Numbering at a Number Other Than One

To begin numbering pages at a number other than one, follow these steps:
  1. Set up the page numbers in the background.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. Type the starting page number in the Start Publication With Page box.

Numbering Facing Pages Before Facing Pages Have Been Created

If your publication is not already set up to use facing pages, you can automatically create facing page numbers by following these steps:
  1. On the View menu, click Go To Background.
  2. Create a text frame where you want the page number to appear on any right-hand page, and insert a page number mark.
  3. On the Arrange menu, click Layout Guides.
  4. Click to select the Create Two Backgrounds With Mirrored Guides, and click OK.
Publisher will create a second background for the left page that mirrors the background for the right page.

Adding Page Numbers After Facing Pages Have Been Created

If your publication is already set up to use facing pages, you cannot create them automatically. Instead, you must create separate text frames with separate page number markers for the right and left background pages. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Go to the background of the right page in your publication.
  2. Create a text frame. Insert a page number marker and position it where you want it for all pages on the right.
  3. On the Arrange menu, click Layout Guides.
  4. Click to clear the Create Two Backgrounds With Mirrored Guides box. Click OK.
  5. On the Arrange menu, click Layout Guides.
  6. Click to select the Create Two Backgrounds With Mirrored Guides box. Click OK.
This procedure will insert a page number on the background left-hand page.
