PUB2000: Publisher Can't Play .wav File Without Sound Card (212628)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to play an embedded .wav file in Microsoft Publisher 98, you may receive the following error:
Another application is playing audio. You can either interrupt the application or wait until it is done. Then try using Sound Recorder again.

CAUSE

This error will occur when either of the following conditions is true:
  • There is no sound card installed in the computer.

    -or-

  • The sound card is not listed in the Device Manager but you have Sound Recorder or Media Player installed.
NOTE: To access the Device Manager, right-click the My Computer icon and then click Properties on the shortcut menu that appears.

RESOLUTION

To play an embedded .wav file in Publisher, use the method appropriate for your situation.

Method 1: If You Installed a Sound Card

If you installed a sound card but it is not listed in Device Manager, follow these steps:
  1. Close all running programs.
  2. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add New Hardware.
  4. In the Add New Hardware Wizard, follow these steps:
    1. Click Next.
    2. Click Yes to search for new hardware. Click Next.
    3. Click Next and follow the instructions on your screen.

Method 2: If You Do not Have a Sound Card Installed

If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one if you want to play embedded sound files.
