WD2000: Word Stops Responding or Returns an Error Message When You Print to Fax (212372)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q212372

SYMPTOMS

When you print to a fax machine, you may receive a General Protection fault or an invalid page fault, Microsoft Word may stop responding (hang), or you may receive an error message similar to the following:
File Not Found

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using a fax driver and you have background printing turned on. When background printing is turned on, the fax driver cannot display informational dialog boxes correctly; therefore, Word is unable to print your document.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, turn off background printing. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Print tab.
  3. Click to clear the Background printing check box.
NOTE: Background printing allows you to print documents in the background, which allows you to continue working in Word while you print a document. When you turn off background printing, you may need to wait until the fax machine has finished printing before you can continue to use Word.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, check with your fax manufacturer for an updated fax driver that corrects this issue. For information about how to contact your fax manufacturer, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
