This article was previously published under Q212256

SYMPTOMS

In WordPerfect 6.x, when you open a Rich Text Format (RTF) document that was created in Microsoft Word 2000, the document is empty.

CAUSE

Corel WordPerfect 6.x does not correctly convert a Microsoft Unicode Rich Text Format (RTF) file. This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You create a document in Word 2000.

    -and-
  • You click Save As on the File menu, and save the file as one of the following:

    • Rich Text Format (*.rtf)
    • Word 97-2000 & 6.0/95 - RTF (*.doc)

    -and-
  • You open the document in WordPerfect 6.x.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, save the Word 2000 document in the WordPerfect 5.x for Windows format before you open it in WordPerfect 6.x.

For more information about converting between Word and WordPerfect 5.0, 5.1, and 5.2, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type save WordPerfect in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

MORE INFORMATION

The Rich Text Format (RTF) file format specification has been updated for Microsoft Word. The RTF Specification is a method of encoding formatted text and graphics for easy transfer between applications. Without the RTF file format, you would have to rely on special translation software to move word-processing documents between different MS-DOS, Windows, OS/2, Macintosh, and Power Macintosh programs.

The RTF Specification provides a format for text and graphics interchange that can be used with different output devices, operating environments, and operating systems. RTF uses the ANSI, PC-8, Macintosh, or IBM PC character set to control the representation and formatting of a document, both on the screen and in print.

With the RTF Specification, documents created under different operating systems and with different software applications can be transferred between those operating systems and applications.

NOTE: The latest RTF Specification, version 1.6, is available in the MSDN library. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
