XL2000: The Fill Values Command Fills Series Instead of Values with Merge Cells Formatting (212227)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, the Fill Values command on the worksheet cell shortcut menu fills series instead of values as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because when the active cell contains merge cells formatting, and you run the Fill Values command on the shortcut menu, Excel fills series instead of values.

WORKAROUND

To fill values when your data contains a merged cell, do not right-click to fill values. Instead, follow these steps:
  1. Select the merged cell, and then drag the pointer sufficiently down or across to select an area that is exactly the same size and shape as the merged cell.
  2. Press CTRL+D or point to Fill on the Edit menu, and then click Down or Across, depending on which direction you want to fill.

The value of the merged cell is filled into the area highlighted, along with merge cell formatting.
  3. To remove the merge cell formatting, click Cells on the Format menu, click the Alignment tab, and then click to clear the Merge cells check box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
