WD2000: Format of List Style Unexpectedly Removed (212223)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q212223 SYMPTOMS
Text applied with the List Number style or List Bullet style loses its
formatting when a custom style is applied that is based on one of these styles.
CAUSE
This functionality is by design. The List styles are the default styles for
numbers and bullets in Word. However, when you create a custom style based on any of these List styles, Word uses the custom style (that is based on the List style) for numbered or bulleted lists.

WORKAROUND
Use any of the following methods appropriate for your situation to create a numbered or bulleted list: Method 1: Use a Custom Style to Change the Format of Numbers or Bullets
To create a custom style, follow these steps: - On the Format menu, click Style.
- In the Style dialog box, click New.
- In the New Style dialog box, under Based on, click to select the style you want to base your new style on.
NOTE: Do not create a custom style that is based on any of the List Number or List Bullet styles.
- Click to select the Add To Template check box if you want to apply this style to the current and future documents.
NOTE: If you do not select the Add To Template check box, your new style will only be available in the current document.
- Click Format, and make the changes you want to the new number or bullet style.
- Click OK to return to the Style dialog box, and then click Close.
- Apply your new number or bullet style.
Method 2: Create a Custom Template Containing Custom Styles
Create a custom template containing custom styles for each of the numbering format types you want. Do not use or change the default list styles. Then, when creating a new style, base it on the custom style with the same number format you want. Method 3: Use the Default List Styles for Numbers or Bullets
Use any of the default List Number or List Bullet styles for your list. NOTE: If you change the formatting of any List style, those changes may be lost when you restart Word. If changes to the tab or indent attributes of these styles are needed, create and apply a custom style as described in method 1.
