SYMPTOMS

When you click a row or column divider in Microsoft Excel, all open workbooks may be unexpectedly recalculated.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • Calculation for the active workbook is set to Automatic.

    -and-
  • You click the row or column divider but do not resize the column or row.

WORKAROUND

To prevent Excel from recalculating values when you click the row or column header, set calculation to Manual. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box, click the Calculation tab. Under Calculation, click Manual.
NOTE: With manual calculation selected, formulas are not recalculated automatically. This may cause formulas to appear incorrect. To recalculate the values on the sheet at any time, press F9.
