The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q212153

SYMPTOMS

When you use the AutoFormat (or AutoFormat As You Type) feature in Word, Word does not replace hyphens with an en dash. However, Word does replace two hyphens in a row with an em dash.

NOTE: To view the AutoFormat or AutoFormat As You Type option, click AutoCorrect on the Tools menu.

RESOLUTION

To insert an en dash, type the text followed by a space, one or two hyphens, and then one or no space, followed by more text. Microsoft Word automatically inserts an en dash ( - ).

For example: "See pages 3 - 10" becomes "See pages 3-10."
