WD2000: "What's This?" Doesn't Show Formatting for Text Inside Text Box (212143)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q212143

SYMPTOMS

When you click What's This? on the Help menu and then click text inside a text box to identify paragraph and direct formatting, nothing happens. In contrast, if you click text outside a text box, you can view format settings.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because a text box resides in a drawing layer. Microsoft Word does not reveal format settings for text placed in the drawing layer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior and view the format settings of text in a text box, follow these steps:
  1. Select the text in the text box.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  3. On the Standard toolbar, click New.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  5. On the Help menu, click What's This?.
  6. Click the text to view the format settings.
  7. Close the document without saving changes.

MORE INFORMATION

A button for the What's This? command is not on a toolbar in Word 2000. If you want to add this command to a toolbar, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click to select the Commands tab.
  2. Under Categories, click Window and Help.
  3. Under Commands, drag the What's This? command to a toolbar.
  4. Click Close.
