This article was previously published under Q212143 SYMPTOMS
When you click What's This? on the Help menu and then click text inside a text box to identify paragraph and direct formatting, nothing happens. In contrast, if you click text outside a text box, you can view format settings.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because a text box resides in a drawing layer. Microsoft Word does not reveal format settings for text placed in the drawing layer.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior and view the format settings of text in a text box, follow these steps:
- Select the text in the text box.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy.
- On the Standard toolbar, click New.
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
- On the Help menu, click What's This?.
- Click the text to view the format settings.
- Close the document without saving changes.
