In Microsoft Word 2000, you can apply shading and borders to a single word or phrase. This article shows you how to do so.

To apply shading to a single word or phrase, follow these steps:
  1. Select the word or phrase that you want to shade.
  2. On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
  3. On the Shading tab, select the shading color, style, and pattern that you want.
  4. Under Apply to, select Text.
  5. Click OK.
To apply a border to a single word or phrase, follow these steps:
  1. Select the word or phrase that you want to shade.
  2. On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
  3. On the Borders tab, select the setting, color, style, and width that you want.
  4. Under Apply to, click to select Text.
  5. Click OK.
NOTE: In versions of Word earlier than Microsoft Word 97 for Windows, shading is not a paragraph nor a character format. You cannot apply shading to a word by clicking Borders and Shading on the Format menu without affecting the entire paragraph, nor can you create a character style to apply the shading.
