WD2000: AutoRecover Option Is Turned Off for Master Documents (212063)

This article was previously published under Q212063 SYMPTOMS
Word does not save AutoRecover information when you are working in a master document even though you have the option selected.
To locate the Save AutoRecover info every option, click Options on the Tools menu and then click the Save tab.
NOTE: The Save AutoRecover info every option automatically makes a document recovery file at the interval you enter in the minutes box (enter a number from 1 to 120). If your computer stops responding (hangs) or loses power unexpectedly, Word opens the AutoRecover file the next time you start Word. The AutoRecover file may contain unsaved information that would otherwise be lost from your original document. If your original document was damaged, you may be able to recover information from the AutoRecover file.
IMPORTANT: AutoRecover does not replace the Save command. You must still save your document while you are working on it.
CAUSE
By design, Microsoft Word does not create an AutoRecover file when you are working in a master document, because the AutoRecover file format is not compatible with the master document file format.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, turn on the Always create backup copy option. With this option, Word saves the previous version of the document as a backup copy every time you save the document.
To locate the Always create backup copy option, on the Tools menu, click Options, and click the Save tab.
It is recommended that you frequently save your document while you are working on it. To save your document, click Save on the File menu.
