WD2000: Column Selection Lost After Changing Font Format (212039)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q212039

SYMPTOMS

After you press CTRL+SHIFT+F8, select a column of text, and then change the font format, the text does not remain selected after you apply the formatting.

NOTE: To change the font format, click Font on the Format menu.

CAUSE

When you press CTRL+SHIFT+F8, the Vertical Selection mode is activated, and you can use the arrow keys to select a column of text.

If you change the font format of the selected text, the width of the characters may change. This can cause the column selection to no longer be accurate. Therefore, by design, the text selection is lost when you change the font format.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use the Vertical Selection mode to select a column of text, use only the arrow keys to select the column. Also, do not click into a different column because an unwanted column selection may occur.

To cancel the column selection, press ESC.

For more information about additional keyboard shortcuts you can use to select text, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type selecting text in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
