This article describes how to use the EQ field to place a box around individual letters, words, or combinations of words.
NOTE: In Microsoft Word 2000, you can also use Borders and Shading (on the Format menu, click Borders and Shading) to put a box around individual letters or words. You can also use the drawing tools and WordArt to create letters, words, and combinations of words in a box.

To place a box around an individual letter, word, or combination of words, use the {EQ} field with the \X switch, as in the examples later in this article.
How to Insert an EQ Field
To insert an EQ field to place a box around text, do one of the following:
- To insert an EQ field from the menus in Word, follow these steps:
- On the Insert menu, click Field.
- In the Field names list, click Eq and then click Options.
- On the Options tab, under Switches, click \X() and click Add to Field. In the Field codes box, click to place the insertion point between the parentheses ( () ) and type the text you want inside the box.
- Click OK to close the Field Options dialog box.
- Click OK to close the Field dialog box.

- To insert an EQ field manually, follow these steps:
- Press CTRL+F9 to insert the field braces ({}).
NOTE: Field braces are not the same character as the "{" or "}" character on your keyboard. - With the insertion point between the field braces, type the EQ field as you want it to appear.

returned. How to Show the Results of an EQ Field
If an EQ field appears in your document similar to {EQ \X(Box)}, to show the results of the EQ field, press ALT+F9 (this turns off all of the field codes in your document). To show the result of one field, select the EQ field and press SHIFT+F9.

Example 4: Use "Borders and Shading" to Create a Nested Box Effect
The EQ field can be combined with borders or page borders to get a nested border box effect (similar to Example 3). To do this, create an EQ field similar to one of the previous examples in this article, select the EQ field, and then follow these steps:
- On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
- On the Borders or Page Borders tab, click the type of box (listed under Setting), click the style of line border you want (listed under Style), and change the Apply to box to Text.
NOTE: You can also change the color and width of the lines of the border before you click OK. - Click OK.
