WD2000: Dates in Table Are Sorted Incorrectly as Date Type (212009)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q212009

SYMPTOMS

Dates earlier than January 1, 1901, or later than December 31, 4095, are sorted incorrectly when you sort a list in a table as a Date type.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Microsoft Word does not recognize dates earlier than January 1, 1901, or later than December 31, 4095, as valid dates.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Select the dates to be sorted.
  2. On the Table menu, click Sort.
  3. In the Sort Text dialog box, under Sort by, click Field 2; in the Type box, click Number.
  4. In the Sort Text dialog box, under Then by, click Field 1; in the Type box, click Date.
  5. Click OK.
When you use this method, Word treats the comma as a field separator (any character that separates one field of data from another) and can then sort the list of dates by using the year as a Number field, and by using the month and day as a Date field.

MORE INFORMATION

As an example of the issue described in the "Symptoms" section, when you sort the following list

May 1, 1504
Jan 1, 1901
April 2, 1400
May 5, 1503
Sept 6, 1966

you receive the following the results:

May 1, 1504
April 2, 1400
May 5, 1503
Jan 1, 1901
Sept 6, 1966
