WD2000: Numbering Continues in a Pasted Table (211928)

In Microsoft Word 2000, when you paste a numbered table from one place in a document to another, the numbers in the pasted table are updated to the next numbers in the sequence. This behavior occurs if either of the following is true:
- You click Paste or Paste Cells on the Edit menu.
-or- - You click Paste Special on the Edit menu, and then click Paste link and Formatted Text (RTF).
CAUSE
The functionality of numbering changed in Microsoft Word 97 and later versions. Word now determines how to number lists based on an item's relationship to other numbered items in the document.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Paste SpecialNOTE: This method formats the pasted text as HTML text.
When pasting a numbered table, if you want to preserve the numbering in the table, follow these steps:
- Select the table by placing the insertion point anywhere in the table. On the Table menu, point to Select and then click Table.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy.
- Move the insertion point to where you want the table to be pasted and then on the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
- In the Paste Special dialog box, click Paste link. Under As, click HTML Format and then click OK.
Method 2: Restart Numbering
When you have pasted a table, and the numbering sequence has changed, to reset the numbering sequence to start at the number 1, follow these steps:
- Place the insertion point inside the first cell of the table.
NOTE: The renumbering starts in whichever cell the insertion point is placed. - On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering. On the Numbered tab, select the numbering style you want, click Restart numbering and then click OK.
Method 3: Custom Numbering
When you have pasted a table, and the numbering sequence has changed, follow these steps to correct the numbering sequence to start at any number you choose:
- Place the insertion point inside the first cell of the table.
NOTE: The renumbering starts in whichever cell the insertion mark is placed. - On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering. On the Numbered tab, select the numbering style you want, click Customize, type the number you want in the Start at box and then click OK.
