WD2000: REF Field Becomes Text When Converting from Word 2000 to Word for Mac 5.x (211876)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q211876

SYMPTOMS

If you save a Microsoft Word 2000 document that contains a REF field in Microsoft Word for Macintosh 5.x format, the REF field is converted to text.

For example, if your Word 2000 document contains the following field

{Ref test}

where test is a bookmark, and you open the document in Word for Mac, the field looks like this:

test

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Word for Mac does not support bookmarks.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you can't find a component that you need, and the Microsoft Windows installer doesn't automatically install it, you can install the component yourself. If you originally installed Word or Office from a network file server or from a shared folder, run that copy of the Setup program. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Close all programs.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • If you installed Word by using the Office Setup 2000 program, click Microsoft Office 2000 on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.
    • If you installed Word as an individual program, click Microsoft Word on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
NOTE: If you installed Word from a CD-ROM, and you have mapped your CD-ROM drive to a new drive letter since you originally installed Word, run Setup again from the CD-ROM. If you are running any Word files from the CD-ROM, you must uninstall Word, and then install Word again from the CD-ROM.
