WD2000: Error Expanding Subdocuments If Network Connection Is Lost (211824)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q211824

SYMPTOMS

When you work in a master document and you lose your network connection, Microsoft Word may not open or expand any subdocuments and may display the following error message:
The subdocument \\<path name>\<file name> is missing. Do you want to expand the master document without this document?
If you click No, the Expand Subdocuments command stops running. If you click Yes, Word expands the remaining subdocuments; however, if any of the remaining subdocuments is also saved on a network drive, Word displays the same error message again for that document.

CAUSE

A master document in Microsoft Word cannot open (expand) a subdocument that is saved on a network drive when the network connection has been lost.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this error message after losing your network connection, end the Expand Subdocuments command to prevent expanding the remaining collapsed subdocuments. To do this, click No in the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

NOTE: The Expand Subdocuments command will also end after the last collapsed subdocument in the master document receives the error.

After ending the Expand Subdocuments command, you must re-establish your network connection before expanding (opening) the subdocuments contained in your master document.
