  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q211812

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Format Painter to copy graphic attributes (such as fill color and line color) from one graphic image to another, the graphic attributes are not copied.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the graphic image was inserted with the "Inline with text" wrapping style. The Format Painter cannot copy properties of graphics that are inserted with the "Inline with text" wrapping style.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Change the Inline Graphic to a Floating Graphic

To change the inline graphic to a floating graphic, follow these steps:
  1. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File.
  2. Select the picture that you want to import, and then click Insert.
  3. Click the picture to select it, and then on the Format menu, click Picture.
  4. In the Format Picture dialog box, click the Layout tab.
  5. Select the In front of text option, and then click OK.

Method 2: Add Formatting Directly to the Inline Graphic

Depending on the effect you want, you can do one of several things to format the graphic. To use the Format Picture dialog box, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the picture, and then click Format Picture.
  2. Select the appropriate settings on the Colors and Lines, Size, Layout, and Picture tabs, and then click OK.
To adjust borders, follow these steps:
  1. Click the picture to select it.
  2. On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
  3. Select the appropriate settings for your border, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Graphic objects have two sets of properties: one for inline objects and one for floating objects. The Format Painter copies only graphic attributes from the drawing layer.

For more information about how to copy character and paragraph formats, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type copy paragraph formats in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
