XL2000: Cannot Drag Cells When You Use AutoFilter (211635)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you try to drag cells, you receive the following error message:
The command you chose cannot be performed with multiple selections. Select a single range and click the command again.

CAUSE

This error message may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • You are using AutoFilter to sort a range that includes a hidden column. (To hide a column, on the Format menu, point to Column and then click Hide.)

    -and-
  • You are trying to drag a range of cells, and the location to which you are dragging the cells contains the hidden column.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, unhide the hidden column, and then drag the cells. To unhide the column, follow these steps:
  1. Select the columns on either side of the hidden column. For example, if column G is hidden, select F and H.
  2. On the Format menu, point to Column, and then click Unhide.

    The hidden column reappears.
  3. Drag the cells that you want to move.
NOTE: To unhide every column in the workbook, click the Select All Cells button, point to Columns on the Format menu, and then click Unhide.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
