WD2000: Word Stops Responding When You Mark Index Entries (211389)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q211389

SYMPTOMS

When you mark index entries in a long document, either manually or with the AutoMark feature, Word may appear to stop responding (hang). When you press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, the Windows task list may indicate that Word is not responding.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, break your long document into separate smaller documents, and then mark or AutoMark the index entries in each of the smaller documents. After you have marked the index entries in the smaller documents, you can combine the files back into one long document and insert the index.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
