SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows 2000 on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Pavilion 7230 computer, the computer may stop responding (hang) during the first boot after Setup finishes.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Yamaha OPL3-sa sound card is set to "Disabled" in the computer's CMOS settings.

RESOLUTION

Change the setting for the Yamaha OPL3-sa sound card from "Disabled" to "Auto" in the computer's CMOS settings. For information about how to do this, please consult the computer's documentation or manufacturer.

Changing the setting for the sound card from "Disabled" to "Auto" allows Windows 2000 to initialize the sound card and finish booting.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
