SYMPTOMS

While you are installing Adobe Acrobat version 3.01, Setup returns the following error message while preparing to install Adobe Acrobat Distiller Assistant:
A PostScript printer driver (Pscript.drv or Pscript.dll) must be installed to print to Distiller Assistant. See the Readme.win file for information on correctly configuring Distiller Assistant. Adobe Acrobat 3.0x Setup will continue when you click OK.
You then receive the following error message:
Adobe Acrobat 3.0x Setup was unable to automatically install Distiller Assistant v3.0x. After finishing the installation, please read the ReadMe file for instructions to correct this problem.

CAUSE

In Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0, this error message occurs if you have no PostScript printer driver installed or if you have installed only the Adobe PostScript printer driver (AdobePS) before installing Distiller Assistant. Distiller Assistant requires a PostScript printer driver, but Adobe Acrobat version 3.01 was shipped before the Adobe PostScript printer driver for Windows NT version 4.0 (AdobePS) was released. Therefore, Distiller Assistant is designed to check only for the Microsoft Windows NT PostScript printer driver (Pscript.dll).

Windows 2000 installs the new Pscript5.dll PostScript printer driver (not the Pscript.dll driver) when you install a PostScript printer. Therefore, Adobe Acrobat Setup issues the error messages listed above when you attempt to install Distiller Assistant, even though you have already installed a Microsoft PostScript printer driver.

RESOLUTION

Adobe Technical Support reports that this will be fixed in Adobe Acrobat version 4.0.
