WD2000: AutoNum Field Not Updated Correctly Inside Table (211196)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q211196

SYMPTOMS

When you use the AUTONUM field in Word to number several paragraphs inside a single cell in a table, each paragraph displays the same number.

NOTE: This problem also occurs when you use the AUTONUM field in different columns in the same table row.

CAUSE

The AUTONUM field is used to number paragraphs, incrementing each new paragraph in sequence automatically. Word treats each row in a table as a separate paragraph.

RESOLUTION

To number several paragraphs inside a single cell in a table or in a different column in the same table row, apply paragraph numbering. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Select the text in the table cell that you want to be numbered.
  2. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  3. On the Numbered tab or Outline Numbered tab, click to select the numbering style you want and then click OK.
