WD2000: "Save As" Command Cannot Be Executed from Automated Word Instance (210553)

SYMPTOMS

When you automate a new instance of Microsoft Word and you attempt to overwrite an existing file, the Save As command cannot be run, and the file is not overwritten.

The following macro exhibits the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. Edit the following macro according to the steps listed later in this article.
Dim appWord As New Word.Application
Dim doc As Document
Dim dlg As Dialog

Set doc = appWord.Documents.Add
Set dlg = appWord.Dialogs(wdDialogFileSaveAs)
appWord.Visible = True
appWord.Activate
dlg.Show
				

Editing the Sample Macro

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Remove the New keyword from the Dim appWord statement.
  2. Add the following statement before the Set Doc statement.
    Set appWord = Word.Application
    					
When you edit the sample macro, the result is the following macro:
Dim appWord As Word.Application
Dim doc As Document
Dim dlg As Dialog

Set appWord = Word.Application
Set doc = appWord.Documents.Add
Set dlg = appWord.Dialogs(wdDialogFileSaveAs)
appWord.Visible = True
