"Disable features not supported by Word 97" check box is cleared when you open a document in Word 2000 (210076)

SYMPTOMS

When you save a Microsoft Word 2000 document for which you have selected the Disable features not supported by Word 97 check box, and you then reopen this same document, the Disable features not supported by Word 97 check box is cleared and not available.

To see the Disable features not supported by Word 97 check box, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Save tab in the Options dialog box.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you initially save your document as a Rich Text Format (.rtf) file, and you then reopen the document in Word.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not save your document as an .rtf file. Instead, save your document as a Word document (.doc file). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word 2000.
  2. Re-create your document.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  4. In the Options dialog box, click the Save tab.
  5. Select the Disable features not supported by Word 97 check box, and then click OK.
  6. On the File menu, click Save As.
  7. In the Save As dialog box, click Word Document (*.doc) in the Save as type box.
  8. In the File name box, type a file name, and then click Save.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2000.
