WD2000: Word Is Slow (May Appear to Hang) Inserting a Hyperlink (210070)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q210070

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a hyperlink in Word (on the Insert menu, click Hyperlink), as you type the hyperlink path, Word may function very slowly or may appear to stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

When you type a hyperlink path, Word translates and resolves the path to either a Universal Resource Locator (URL) path or a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path.

When you start by typing double forward slashes (//), as a Web URL would contain, Word interprets the path as UNC. Because a valid UNC path does not contain forward slashes, Word is slow in resolving the path.

Word may appear to stop responding while it is resolving the hyperlink. After you insert the hyperlink into your document, the following error message appears when you click the hyperlink:
The address of this site is not valid. Check the address and try again.

WORKAROUND

Type the hyperlink in a valid format.

URL

For a URL hyperlink to a Web page, use a format similar to one of the following:

http://www.microsoft.com

-or-

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com

UNC

For a UNC hyperlink to a file, use a format similar to the following:

File://\\server\share

For example:

File://\\My Computer Name\My Documents\Filename.doc

-or-

File://c:\FolderName\Filename.doc

For more information about inserting hyperlinks, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type How do I create a hyperlink? in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
