WD2000: Outline Numbering Not Correctly Applied to Heading Styles (210023)

SYMPTOMS

When you apply outline numbering to text in a document where more than one heading style has been defined, the resulting numbered list is not applied correctly to the heading styles.

When you select outline numbering according to the outline scheme 1), a), i), the result is a sequentially numbered list, 1), 2), 3).

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. In Microsoft Word 2000, on the Edit menu, click Undo Bullets and Numbering.
  2. Select the text you want to apply the numbered list to.
  3. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  4. On the Outline Numbered tab, click the outlining style on the top row, second from the left.
  5. Click Customize.
  6. In the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box, click More.

    Notice that Link level to style has (no style) selected.
  7. Select 1 in the Level box and click the appropriate style to be used in the Link level to style box.
  8. Select 2 in the Level box and click the appropriate style to be used in the Link level to style box.
  9. Select 3 in the Level box and click the appropriate style to be used in the Link level to style box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2000.
