WD2000: Encryption Is Not Applied to Embedded Objects (209707)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q209707

SYMPTOMS

If you save a document containing an embedded document (inserted as a linked file or object), and then you apply the Password to open command, the document can still be opened with a text editor or by using the "Recover text from any file" converter (supplied with Microsoft Word 2000), and the text in the embedded file is displayed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not insert the file or object into a Word document. Instead, save each Word document separately and set a password in the Password to open box.

To apply Password to open to a Word document, click the Tools button in the Save As dialog box, and then click General Options.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
