SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to play a MIDI (.mid) or wave audio (.wav) file, you may receive the following error message:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in My Computer by clicking View and then clicking Options.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Home Publishing cannot communicate with the default Microsoft Windows playback program for MIDI or wave audio files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Accessories, point to Entertainment, and then click Windows Media Player.

    If Windows Media Player is not installed on your computer, download and install Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.0. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads

    Click the appropriate link for your version of Windows, and then follow the instructions on the screen to download and install the program. When you are finished installing Windows Media Player follow step 1 to start the program.
  2. On the View menu in Windows Media Player, click Options.
  3. Click the Formats tab.
  4. In the Available Formats box, click to select the Audio File and MIDI File check boxes.
  5. Click OK, and then close Windows Media Player.
