After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 3.1 with Microsoft LAN Manager 2.x to Windows 98, you may receive the following error message when you start your computer:
Error: 18028 Unable to open PROTMAN$.
After you receive the error message, Windows 98 starts normally.
CAUSE
Setup does not disable the LOAD TCPIP command in the Autoexec.bat file when you upgrade to Windows 98 from Windows 3.1 with LAN Manager 2.x.
RESOLUTION
Disable the LOAD TCPIP command in the Autoexec.bat file:
- Click Start, click Run, type sysedit, and then click OK.
- On the Window menu, click Autoexec.bat.
- Locate the LOAD TCPIP line in the Autoexec.bat file.
- Type REM and a space at the beginning of the line.
- On the File menu, click Exit.
- When you are prompted to save the changes, click Yes.
- Restart your computer.
