Computer Stops Responding After Windows 98 Upgrade (207831)

After you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 95-based computer to Windows 98, your computer may stop responding (hang) when you restart your computer.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if your communication port 1 (COM1) has the
same Interrupt Request (IRQ) as COM3.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, restart your computer in Safe Mode and remove COM3:
- Hold CTRL while your computer restarts, and then choose Safe Mode from the Windows 98 Start Up Menu.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System, click Device Manager, double-click the Ports branch to expand it, click COM3, click Remove, and then click OK.
