Download and Install the AutoCorrect Utility

NOTE: This procedure replaces an AutoCorrect entry on the destination computer that has the same name as an AutoCorrect entry on the source computer. All other AutoCorrect entries are added to the AutoCorrect list on the destination computer.

The AutoCorrect utility is part of the supplemental macros available for Microsoft Word 2000 and must be installed on both the source computer and the destination computer. The AutoCorrect utility is not installed with the Microsoft Word 2000 Setup Program and is not contained on any of the CD-ROMs.

To install the supplemental macros, follow these steps:
  1. Download the Word 2000 Supplemental Macros file from the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Download the file (Macros.exe) by clicking Download Now! and following the instructions in the dialog boxes.
  3. Double-click the Macros.exe program file on your hard disk to start the Setup program.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Back Up Your AutoCorrect Entries on the Source Computer

To back up your AutoCorrect entries from the source computer that contains the AutoCorrect entries you want to move, do the following steps:

NOTE: Backing up or moving AutoCorrect entries does not remove (delete) them from the source computer.
  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. Change the Look in box to the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Samples\

  3. Click to select Macros9.dot, and then click Open. If you receive the following message, click Enable Macros.

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Samples\Macros9.dot

    contains macros by

    Microsoft Corporation

    Macros may contain viruses. It is always safe to disable macros, but if the macros are legitimate, you might lose functionality.

    NOTE: Select to add the certificate that was used to sign these macros to the list of trusted sources if the security level is set to High, and you trust the macro source. If the security level is set to Medium, you can enable the macros without adding the certificate to the list of trusted sources. Don't accept macros from a source that you don't know.
  4. After the Macros9.dot file opens, click Sample Macros on the Macros toolbar, and then click AutoCorrect Utility.

    NOTE: If the Macros toolbar does not appear after the Macros9.dot template opens, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Macros.

    The AutoCorrect Utility dialog box appears and displays the following text:

    This program will allow you to back up and restore your AutoCorrect entries. Choose Backup to create a Word document from your AutoCorrect list. Choose Restore to restore an AutoCorrect list from a Backup document.

  5. In the AutoCorrect Utility dialog box, click Backup.

    When you click Backup, Word adds and formats your AutoCorrect entries to a new Word document and then prompts you to save the document. Word suggests saving your AutoCorrect document as AutoCorrect Backup Document.
  6. Change the Save in box to the location where you want to save your AutoCorrect Backup Document.

    NOTE: By default, the AutoCorrect utility saves your AutoCorrect Backup Document to the same folder where the Macros9.dot template is located. You can change the Save in box to a location (for example, a network folder) that is accessible by the computer you want to share your AutoCorrect entries with, or to a floppy disk.
  7. Click Save to save your AutoCorrect Backup Document.
  8. Click Cancel to close the AutoCorrect Utility dialog box.
  9. On the File menu, click Close to close the Macros9.dot template.

Restore Your AutoCorrect Entries to the Destination Computer

To restore your AutoCorrect entries to the destination computer that you want to share AutoCorrect entries with, do the following steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. Change the Look in box to the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Samples\

  3. Click to select Macros9.dot, and then click Open. If the following message is displayed, click Enable Macros.

    The AutoCorrect Utility dialog box appears and displays the following text:

    This program will allow you to back up and restore your AutoCorrect entries. Choose Backup to create a Word document from your AutoCorrect list. Choose Restore to restore an AutoCorrect list from a Backup document.

  5. In the AutoCorrect Utility dialog box, click Restore. Click Yes to the following message:

    This will replace your current AutoCorrect entries with entries from your backup document that contain the same name. Do you wish to continue?

  6. In the Open dialog box, point to your AutoCorrect Backup Document and then click Open.

    NOTE: If your AutoCorrect Backup contains entries with several paragraphs, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
    There was an error. The document may be in the incorrect format.

  7. After Word has completed adding your AutoCorrect entries, click OK to the following message:

    Restore Complete

  8. Click Cancel to close the AutoCorrect Utility dialog box.
  9. On the File menu, click Close to close the Macros9.dot template.
The AutoCorrect entries that you moved from the other computer are now available.
