PUB2000: WordArt Point Sizes Not Accurate in Large Frames (207613)

SYMPTOMS

If you create a WordArt frame in a publication that is larger than 13 inches in any direction and choose a specific point size for the WordArt text, the text will appear larger than it is supposed to in your publication. If you shrink the WordArt frame until it is less than 13 inches in all directions, the text will appear in the correct size.

CAUSE

The maximum object size that WordArt can create directly is 13 inches by 13 inches. If your WordArt object is less than this size, the text scaling is handled by WordArt and is accurate. If your object is greater than this size, Publisher has to scale the object proportionally, including the text.

RESOLUTION

Instead of creating one WordArt frame larger than 13 inches, you can create several smaller WordArt frames.

If, however, you must have a single WordArt frame that is larger than 13 inches and you need to accurately control the point size of the text, you can manually reduce the text. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Find the largest dimension of your WordArt frame. To determine this dimension, select the WordArt frame and then look at the status bar at the bottom of the Publisher window.
  2. Divide the number 13 by the largest dimension of your WordArt frame.
  3. Multiply this number by the size you want your text to appear in your publication. Make a note of this number.
  4. To edit the WordArt object, double-click it.
  5. In the Size list on the toolbar, type the number you obtained in step 3 (round it to the nearest half-point).
The text in the WordArt frame should now appear in the correct size.

For example, if you have a WordArt frame that is 20-inches wide by 2.5- inches tall and you want the text in it to be 96 points, follow these steps:

  1. Divide 13 by 20 (the quotient is .65).
  2. Multiply .65 by 96 (the product is 62.4).
  3. Double-click the WordArt object and set the text size to 62.5.
The text will now appear as 96 points in your publication.

STATUS

This symptom is an effect of Publisher's ability to extend the functionality of WordArt beyond its design limitations.
