SYMPTOMS

  • Your computer may stop responding (hang) or the screen may turn black when the screen saver starts.

  • Full power may not be restored to your monitor when you interrupt the screen saver with a keyboard or pointing device action.

  • Your display settings may change when you interrupt the screen saver with a keyboard or pointing device action.

  • You may see multiple blurred images on the screen when you interrupt the screen saver with a keyboard or pointing device action.
In addition, you may receive the following error message:

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Advanced Power Management (APM) feature of your computer turns off the monitor at the same time the screen saver starts.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure the screen saver to start before the APM feature of your computer turns off the monitor. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Set the interval after which you want the screen saver to start. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Display.
    3. Click the Screen Saver tab.
    4. In the Wait <n> minutes box, click the up or down arrows to select the number of minutes you want to wait for the screen saver to start.
    5. Click OK.
  2. Set the interval after which you want the APM feature of your computer to turn off the monitor. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In Control Panel, double-click Power Management.
    2. Click the Power Schemes tab.
    3. In the Turn Off Monitor box, click the interval of time after which you want the APM feature of your computer to turn off the monitor.

NOTE: The interval of time you click must be greater than the number of minutes you want to wait for the screen saver to start.
  3. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.
