The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q206492

SYMPTOMS

If you open a picture that is embedded in a Microsoft Word document, and you then close the picture without making any changes, you may receive either of the following results:
  • The picture is duplicated so that you have more than one copy of it in your document.

    - or -
  • The size of the picture is increased.
NOTE: To open a picture that is embedded in a Word document, either select the picture, point to Picture Object on the Edit menu, and then click Open; or simply double-click the picture.

You may also find that when you open the picture, you receive the following error message:
There is insufficient memory or disk space. Close extra windows and save your work.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions are true:
  • You insert a picture with a resolution of greater than 72 dpi into your Word document.
  • You open the picture using the Edit Picture command.
    • In Word 2001, hold down the CTRL key and click the picture, and then click Edit Picture on the shortcut menu.

      -or-
    • In Word 98, double-click the picture.
  • You then close the picture without making any changes.
This behavior does not occur if you use a picture with a resolution of 72 dpi or less. The standard Macintosh picture resolution is 72 dpi.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not use the Edit Picture command if you have a picture with a resolution of greater than 72 dpi unless you plan to make some change to the picture. If you do apply the Edit Picture command to a picture with a resolution of greater than 72 dpi, make any small change to the picture before you close it.

STATUS
