WD98: No Prompt That Word 98 Is Saving Normal Template to Local Computer Instead of Network (206482)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q206482

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Word 98 from a read-only network drive, the Normal template may be saved to your local hard disk drive automatically.

You are not prompted to choose a location to save the template to. Instead, the Normal template is saved on the local computer in the Templates folder, which is located in the Microsoft Office 98 folder.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, give your local hard disk drive a different name from that of the read-only network drive.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you install Word 98 on both a read-only network drive and a local hard disk drive that have the same name, start Word, and then quit Word for the first time from the read-only network drive, no prompt or dialog box appears to state that the Normal template is being saved or where it is being saved.
