SYMPTOMS

When you run Windows Setup to upgrade to Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition from the graphical user interface (GUI) in Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.11, the PS/2 mouse may not work.

NOTE: If you open the System tool in Control Panel, you may see a blank mouse entry in Device Manager.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if Setup stops responding (hangs) during the file copy phase, and then you restart Setup from the MS-DOS prompt.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Windows keyboard commands to update the mouse driver. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Press CTRL+ESC, use the arrow keys to select Settings, Control Panel, and then press ENTER.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select System, and then press ENTER.
  3. Use the arrow keys to select the Device Manager tab, and then press the TAB key to select Computer.
  4. Use the arrow keys to select Mouse, use the RIGHT ARROW key to expand the Mouse branch, and then select the blank mouse entry.
  5. Press ALT+R, press the TAB key to select General, and then use the arrow keys to select Driver.
  6. Press ALT+U, use the arrow keys to select Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want, and then select Next.
  7. Press ALT+A, press ALT+M, and then select the name of your mouse's manufacturer.
  8. Press ALT+D, and then select the model of your mouse.
  9. Press ENTER until you complete the Update Device Driver wizard, and then restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue occurs only with PS/2 mouse devices. The Setup process detects serial input devices and inport (bus) mouse devices properly.
