SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to perform a "clean" installation of Windows 98 on a Compaq DeskPro 5166 computer that contains an AMD PCNET PCI - II (1994 BIOS) network adapter, your computer may stop responding (hang) after Windows Setup restarts your computer for the second time.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem:
  1. When your computer stops responding, press the reset button to restart it.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type asd, and then click OK.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen and then restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.

MORE INFORMATION

A "clean" installation of Windows means either installing Windows on a blank hard disk, or installing Windows in a folder other than the folder in which an existing version of Windows is installed.
