SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your IBM ThinkPad-based computer to Windows 98 from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) provided version of Microsoft Windows 95, both Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) and CardBus PC-card controllers may have exclamation points next to them in Device Manager, and PC-cards do not work in your PC-card slot or slots.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if CardBus is disabled in the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). When this condition exists, it creates a conflict between the PCMCIA controller and the CardBus controller.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact IBM to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue, or enable the CardBus controller in the BIOS.

To work around this issue:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, click Files or Folders, type tpw.exe in the Named box, and then click Find Now.
  2. Click the Pccard slot Properties tab, and then click to select the Enable CardBus check box.
  3. On the File menu, click Exit, and then restart your computer.
