OL98: Unable to Fax with Cable Modem (203984)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 98

This article was previously published under Q203984

SYMPTOMS

If you have configured Microsoft Outlook to use a cable modem to send and receive e-mail, you will not be able to send and receive faxes without a separate modem.

CAUSE

Cable modems are not capable of faxing. A fax connection requires a two-way serial communication link between the sending and receiving devices. Cable Internet services use a television coaxial cable connection. A cable modem attaches to a network card, whereas a traditional modem uses a serial or Universal Serial Bus (USB) port.

RESOLUTION

In order to send faxes with Outlook, you need to install a separate modem that is capable of fax transmissions. You must also configure the fax service in a separate profile.
