Err Msg: Could Not Start the SMTP Service, Error: 0126 (202548)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0
This article was previously published under Q202548 We strongly recommend that all users upgrade to Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) version 6.0 running on Microsoft Windows Server 2003. IIS 6.0 significantly increases Web infrastructure security. For more information about IIS security-related topics, visit the following Microsoft Web site: SYMPTOMS
When you try to start the SMTP service in the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, the following error may occur:
Could not start the SMTP Service, error: 0126 the specified module could not be found
CAUSE
The default location for Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 was not chosen during the installation, and the SMTP service was not selected for installation. When you try to install the SMTP service at a later date, the SMTP service cannot find the necessary files needed to start the service. When you install the SMTP service, it installs its DLLs into the \winnt\System32\Inetsrv directory. If IIS 4.0 was not installed in the default location, the SMTP service cannot find the necessary DLLs.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, do the following:
- Copy the following files from the \winnt\System32\Inetsrv directory:
Jpudll.dll
Mboxapi.dll
Seo.dll
Seos.dll
Smtpadm.dll
Smtpkey.dll
Smtpread.txt
Smtpsnap.dll
Smtpsvc.dll
- Paste these files into the directory where you installed IIS 4.0.
This should be the directory where the file Inetinfo.exe is located. - Start the SMTP service from the Microsoft Management Console.
