ACC2000: You Cannot Create or Modify a Data Access Page When a Database Is Open in Read-Only Mode (202384)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Access 2000

This article was previously published under Q202384
Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

Even though a database stores only a link to a data access page and not the data access page itself, you still cannot create a new data access page in a database that you have open in Read-Only mode. You can also not save changes to an existing data access page in a database that you have open in Read-Only mode.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

To create a new data access page or to modify an existing page, you must open a database in Shared mode or in Exclusive mode. If you open the database in Shared Read-Only mode or Exclusive Read-Only mode, you cannot create new data access pages or modify existing pages.

It is possible to use an HTML editor to modify the HTML file created in a non-read-only database outside of the read-only database. However, this practice is not supported by Microsoft Technical Support Professionals.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Start Microsoft Access. When you see the Microsoft Access dialog box, click Cancel.
  2. On the File menu, click Open. The Open dialog box appears.
  3. In the Look in list, browse to the folder where Northwind.mdb resides. This is typically C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Samples.
  4. Click Northwind.mdb, click the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open Read-Only.
  5. Click OK when you see the message explaining that Northwind.mdb is being opened read-only.
  6. Click Pages in the Database window and note that the New button is unavailable (is dimmed).
  7. Open any data access page in Design view and note that the Save button and the Save command on the File menu are dimmed.
