PRJ98: Unexpected Task Split in Project Created in Project 4.x (202133)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q202133

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, if you open a project that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Project, a task may display any of the following behavior:

  • A task with a split in its work may appear as if it does not have a split.

  • A task may have less work than expected, based on how the Gantt bar is displayed.

  • If you decrease or increase the duration of the task, the split where no work is assigned is replaced with work.

  • If you enter percent complete on the task, a split will appear in the Gantt bar.

  • If you assign an additional resource to the task, a split will appear on the Gantt bar.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • You open a project created in an earlier version of Microsoft Project.
  • The project contains a task where there is delay on a resource assignment.
  • The task is zero percent complete.

WORKAROUND

After you enter a percent complete on the task, Microsoft Project will display a split in the Gantt bar.

If you change the duration of the task and duration changes to an incorrect amount, follow these steps to correct it.

  1. Re-enter the correct duration.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Split Task.
  3. In the Gantt Chart view, click the Gantt bar where you want the split to begin.
  4. Drag the split part to provide the split you want.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
